Physio at Boulder Exe, Exeter
Welcome to our Boulder Exe clinic, based inside Boulder Exe bouldering centre on Tudor Street, in the heart of central Exeter.
This is the clinic to choose if step-free access matters to you, if you're a boulderer, or if you're coming from central or north Exeter, the university, or anywhere where Tudor Street is the easier journey. Four of our team work from this clinic, Dan, Laura and Carmen and Will, and between them they cover back pain, sports injuries, post-op rehab, Physio-led Pilates, climbing-related injuries, strength & conditioning rehab, vestibular rehab and acupuncture.
Not a boulderer? You're just as welcome, we treat the full range of musculoskeletal conditions from this clinic, not just climbing injuries.

Why patients choose this clinic
Fully step-free access. Ground floor throughout, no stairs, no lift, no accessibility surprises. If managing stairs is a problem for you, this is the right clinic for your physio appointment.
Genuine on-site expertise. Dan is a Chartered Physiotherapist with a Master's from Brunel University London and additional roles at the Royal Devon University Healthcare Trust as a Band 6 MSK Specialist. Laura brings over 16 years of private MSK experience and is internationally recognised as a "Hip Legend" by the Global Hip Hope Network for her work in hip injury and post-surgical rehabilitation. Carmen holds an MSc in Sport & Exercise Medicine (Distinction) and has supported medical teams in football, rugby, and at events including the London Marathon.
Inside Exeter's leading bouldering centre. If you boulder, we can step out of the treatment room and watch you on the wall, something almost no other physio clinic can offer. The sister culture to roped climbing, with its own unique loading patterns and injury profile.
On-site S&C gym. Boulder Exe houses a fully kitted strength and conditioning gym. Once you're past the early stages of rehab, we can use it for return-to-sport work — proper barbell work, plyometrics, strength testing.
Central Exeter location. A short walk from the city centre, the university, and Exe Bridges. Easier to reach from north and central Exeter than the Quay site.

Boulder Exe is also home to Exeter's first climbing-specific and athletic performance testing service, delivered by our Performance Testing Specialist Will Ashby.
Using the Tindeq Progressor and our on-site S&C gym, Will provides objective testing across:
- Finger strength (Peak Force, Rate of Force Development, Critical Force)
- Shoulder strength profiling (ASH test)
- Lower limb strength, balance and plyometric testing
- Full-body asymmetry analysis
- Personalised training plans delivered via PhysiTrack
Whether you're a climber looking to break a grade, an athlete refining your training, or returning from injury, performance testing turns guesswork into data.
Performance Testing is a separate service from physiotherapy, bookable directly with Will.
How to find us
By car
We're on Tudor Street, just off Western Way in central Exeter, a 5-minute drive from the city centre. The building used to be Fitness First and is near the Mill-on the Exe pub.
Parking at Boulder Exe is paid and handled via an app called Evology Parking, please don't use the iPad at Boulder Exe reception, as that's for climbing members only.
To pay for parking, you'll need to:
1. Download the Evology Parking app before you arrive, there's no physical machine on site, so you can't pay any other way
2. Enter your registration in the app
3. Pay for your session
You can pay in advance — we'd genuinely recommend this. Downloading and setting up the app while standing in the car park is the kind of thing that makes you late and flustered before an appointment. Sort it the night before and you'll arrive calm.
Find the Evology Parking app at evologyparking.com.
Parking - please read before you arrive

Have seen several of the physios here and they are all excellent. Great diagnosticians and expert prescribers. Recently I’ve seen Daniel and Laura, both of whom were fantastic at helping me with complex presentations and pain affecting multiple areas of the body. I’ve felt like I was in really capable hands and that they were really focussed on what matters most - changing my movement patterns. Daniel helped me with a really tricky shoulder issue that other physios could not get to the bottom of and Laura helped me with a stubborn back injury that wasn’t responding to my usual roster of exercises. Everything was explained to me really clearly so I understood what I needed to change. Thanks team!

I saw Dan after 6 weeks of niggling knee pain, at the beginning of training for a marathon. With 1 session, focused on management at home, taping, activation exercises & a plan for the next few weeks of running training - I completed the marathon on Sunday, with no knee pain! Thank you very much for your help.

Yes. One of the advantages of being based inside Boulder Exe is that we can step out of the treatment room and watch you boulder as part of your assessment, useful for finger, shoulder, elbow and wrist injuries where loading patterns matter. We can also use Boulder Exe's S&C gym for late-stage strength rehab and return-to-sport work.
