Neck pain is more than just an inconvenience; it can significantly impact your daily life, causing discomfort and restricting your movement. Whether it’s a persistent, dull ache or a sharp, debilitating pain that limits your mobility, we understand how frustrating it can be to live with neck pain.

You Might Be Asking Yourself:

  • Why does my neck hurt when I sit at my desk or look over my shoulder?

  • Why do I wake up with neck stiffness and headaches?

  • Is my neck pain causing my headaches or even dizziness?

At Quay Kinetics Physio, we’ve helped many clients across Exeter understand and resolve their neck pain. We focus not just on alleviating symptoms but on addressing the root cause to help you achieve lasting relief. Our expert physiotherapists understand how crucial it is to restore pain-free movement and improve your quality of life.

Mechanical Causes of Neck Pain We Treat:

  • Mechanical (Movement-Related) Pain & Stiffness: Often related to poor movement patterns, this type of pain is common for people spending long hours at desks or looking down at screens.

  • Muscle Strains: Overuse or sudden movements can cause muscle strain, leading to pain and tightness in the neck.

  • Disc Injuries: Bulging or herniated discs in the cervical spine can lead to nerve irritation, causing pain and discomfort in the neck and sometimes the arms.

  • Arthritis: Degenerative changes in the cervical spine, including osteoarthritis, can lead to ongoing stiffness and pain.

  • Ergonomics or Deconditioning: Poor posture and long periods of inactivity can weaken muscles and cause neck pain.

Other Neck-Related Conditions We Specialise In:

  • Cervicogenic Headaches: Headaches caused by issues in the neck are a common symptom of musculoskeletal problems that we effectively treat with our expert physiotherapy techniques.

  • Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD): This condition, often resulting from car accidents or trauma, can cause pain, stiffness, and limited movement in the neck.

  • Stress and Tension-Related Pain: Chronic stress can cause muscle tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders, leading to discomfort and pain. We focus on releasing this tension and promoting healthy movement patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions about Neck Pain

  • Yes, and it's one of the most common causes of headaches we see. Cervicogenic headaches originate from stiffness or dysfunction in the upper neck joints and refer pain into the head, often around the temple, forehead, or behind the eye. They're frequently misdiagnosed as tension headaches or migraines. A physiotherapist experienced in neck assessment can usually identify whether your headaches are coming from your neck within the first appointment, and if they are, they respond very well to treatment.

  • Posture is rarely the sole cause of neck pain, despite what you might read online. Research shows there's no single "correct" posture, what matters more is how long you stay in one position without moving, the strength and endurance of your neck and shoulder muscles, and factors like stress, sleep, and workload. We'll assess whether posture is genuinely contributing to your symptoms and give you practical strategies that go beyond "sit up straight."

  • Yes. The upper neck has a direct neurological connection to your balance system, and dysfunction in the upper cervical joints can cause a type of dizziness called cervicogenic dizziness. It's different from vertigo caused by inner ear problems like BPPV — the dizziness tends to be more of a vague unsteadiness or lightheadedness rather than a spinning sensation. We treat both cervicogenic dizziness and vestibular conditions at our clinic, so we can differentiate between them and treat you appropriately.

  • A stiff neck that comes on overnight and eases within a few hours is almost always a minor positional issue, sleeping in an awkward position, a cold draught, or simply a muscular reaction to stress or fatigue. It's not usually a sign of anything serious. If morning stiffness persists for more than a few days, is getting worse, or is accompanied by arm pain, tingling, or weakness, it's worth getting it assessed properly.

  • Most whiplash injuries recover well within 6-12 weeks with the right management. The single most important factor in recovery is staying active and getting early physiotherapy rather than resting in a collar, which research has shown can actually slow healing. Some people develop persistent symptoms beyond 3 months, this is more likely if the initial injury was severe, if you're highly anxious about the injury, or if you've been advised to rest completely. Early assessment and active management give you the best chance of a straightforward recovery.

  • Absolutely, work-related neck pain is one of the most common things we treat. The issue usually isn't your desk setup alone but a combination of sustained postures, insufficient movement breaks, stress, and muscle deconditioning. We'll address all of these: hands-on treatment to settle the current pain, targeted exercises to build the endurance your neck needs for long work days, and practical modifications to your workspace that actually make a difference.
