More about Acupuncture
Western Medicine Acupuncture is a modern approach that merges traditional acupuncture techniques with scientific understanding, creating a powerful therapeutic tool for holistic well-being. At Quay Kinetics Physio, we offer Western Medicine Acupuncture as part of our comprehensive services, aiming to provide you with a balanced and effective approach to musculoskeletal health.
How Western Medicine Acupuncture Can Benefit You:
Pain Relief: Western Medicine Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body. This process stimulates the body's natural pain-relieving mechanisms, releasing endorphins and promoting a sense of relaxation. Whether you're dealing with chronic pain or acute discomfort, acupuncture can offer relief.
Muscle Relaxation: Acupuncture can effectively reduce muscle tension by enhancing blood circulation and promoting relaxation. It's an excellent choice for individuals seeking relief from muscle stiffness, knots, or spasms.
Enhanced Healing: By promoting circulation and improving energy flow, acupuncture can aid the body's natural healing processes. It can support tissue repair and regeneration, helping you recover from injuries more efficiently.
Stress Reduction: Western Medicine Acupuncture is renowned for its stress-reducing benefits. The process triggers the release of neurotransmitters that help regulate mood and reduce anxiety, leaving you with a profound sense of calm.
Balanced Well-Being: Acupuncture doesn't just target physical ailments; it also addresses the mind-body connection. It can help balance your energy, improve sleep quality, and promote an overall sense of well-being.
Don’t just take our word for it
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Most people are surprised by how little they feel. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, much thinner than injection needles or blood test needles. You may feel a brief prick as the needle is inserted, followed by a dull ache, tingling, or warmth around the area, which is actually the therapeutic response. Many patients find the sensation unusual but not painful, and some find the treatment deeply relaxing. If you're nervous about needles, let us know and we'll talk you through it before we start.
-
We offer Western medical acupuncture and dry needling, which is different from traditional Chinese acupuncture. Western acupuncture is based on modern anatomy, physiology, and evidence-based research rather than traditional Chinese medicine concepts like meridians and energy flow. We use acupuncture as part of your overall physiotherapy treatment plan, targeting specific muscles, trigger points, and nerve pathways to reduce pain, release muscle tension, and support recovery. All our acupuncture is delivered by Chartered Physiotherapists who are members of the AACP (Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists).
-
Acupuncture can be effective for a range of musculoskeletal conditions including chronic back pain, neck pain, tension headaches, osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, muscle spasm, and myofascial pain (trigger points). It's often used alongside other physiotherapy techniques rather than as a standalone treatment. The strongest evidence is for chronic pain conditions where the nervous system has become sensitised. We'll discuss with you whether acupuncture is likely to be helpful for your specific condition as part of your treatment plan.
-
Yes, when delivered by a trained and regulated practitioner. All our physiotherapists who offer acupuncture are members of the AACP, which requires specific post-graduate training, regular CPD, and adherence to strict safety and hygiene protocols. We use single-use, sterile, disposable needles. Side effects are rare and usually minor: occasional small bruising at the needle site, temporary light-headedness, or drowsiness after treatment. Serious adverse events are extremely rare. We'll screen you for any contraindications before offering acupuncture.
-
Most people can, but there are some situations where acupuncture may not be suitable or where modifications are needed. These include certain bleeding disorders or anticoagulant medication, pregnancy (some acupuncture points should be avoided), active infection or broken skin at the needle site, epilepsy, and metal allergy. If you have a pacemaker, we'll avoid using electroacupuncture. If you're unsure whether acupuncture is suitable for you, contact us before booking and we'll advise.
-
It varies depending on the condition. For acute muscle tension or trigger points, one or two sessions may be enough to make a significant difference. For chronic pain conditions, a course of 4 to 6 sessions is more typical, usually combined with other physiotherapy treatment. We'll reassess your response after the first couple of sessions and give you an honest view of whether acupuncture is helping and whether further sessions are worthwhile. We won't recommend ongoing treatment if it's not making a measurable difference.
